Sometimes, writing is a hobby; a fixation; an expression of my special interest. Other times, it is my main form of communication and my connection to a wide world in which I am a little bit different from everyone else.
I am a junior at SIU Carbondale studying journalism. Having written for the Daily Egyptian for more than a year, and my high school newspaper for a couple of years before that, I have plenty of experience as a student journalist. Most of what I have written is about sports, which is my area of expertise.
While my most valuable skill is writing, I have also gone into different areas depending on what is needed, including some photography work on a recent story. Classes at SIU have also prepared me for multimedia approaches, including photography, video, and radio. Outside of journalism-specific skills, I am also adept at public speaking. While my on-the-job experience has been in newspapers, I am preparing for a journalism industry that features many different branches, all of which could use these skills.
